A bout de souffle

In this weekend's Guardian, Philip French takes a glimpse into Jean-Luc Godard's A bout de souffle (Breathless). It's the films' 50th anniversary, and French (oddly enough, that is his surname) takes a glimpse into Godard's successful film career, the film which would begin the French new wave, the tumultuous relationships with his arch-nemesis, and the influence he has created on some of the most iconic filmmakers of our time. French also leaves a nice list of must-see new wave films- if you haven't seen them already.

The Simple Life

If I had to envision what a perfect day would look like, I think it would look like this music video. I enjoy Lisa Mitchell's sweet melodic voice, but I appreciate Vanessa Caswill's vision. Sometimes it's the simple things in life that can make you the happiest.

Boxes are the new black

I came across this photo series documenting a street performance by Courtney Kelly Ziegler, titled Life in a Box, where she walks the streets of Montmarte wearing only a cardboard box. The public reaction is obvious- the stares, the gloating, the awkwardness- but unless you're homeless and live in a box, there is something wonderfully liberating from being taken out of your comfort zone and experiencing life in the raw. I mean, in a box.

Beauty is the Beast

I own a magnifying mirror- a woman's prized possession, as well as her ultimate worst enemy. On the normal side of the mirror, I'm me. A little blemish here or there, maybe my eye brows need a bit of plucking. No biggie. I'm not so bad looking. I can deal. On the magnifying side- I'll need my roommate to escort me out the house with the "Only you see that reflection" speech, until I put her face to face with her reflection magnified x300. $146 of beauty products and an appointment with my beloved esthetician later, I've nicknamed myself SuBo, and I'm eating Arugala lettuce for lunch.

Originally published by Blend Magazine in 2008, Simon Wald-Lasowski's photo series titled "Beauty is the Beast" is based on the assumption that beauty is the imperfection. He brings up an interesting topic that is definitely relatable. Maybe he has a magnifying mirror too.

Robo Girl Types

She walks. She probably doesn't talk. She's a 6 foot tall beauty, and apparently has an ass of steel. That's probably what Jeremy Mayer was thinking while he spent his 1,400 hours building Nude IV, aka Delilah. Made entirely out of vintage typewriters (approx. 50), Mayer was inspired by his friends' paintings based on robot women. In a wired.com interview, he mentions how he wanted to achieve sexy without being slutty- giving a sexually charged presence while keeping dignity and pride. Mission Accomplished Mayer- you've got great taste in women.

Hair Sculpture

Someone once told me that my hair bun resembled a bird nest. What they didn't know, was that all though a bird nest may not be the hottest hairtyle example, editors of the latest book Hair'em Scare'em would. Hat hair, drapes, sea of braids... there is nothing that hair stylists in this book haven't though of.

Mixtape: There's Magic In the Air

There's something kind of wonderful about creating your own project. Call it the substitute boyfriend. A photo gig, a film, an animation, a painting. It's like love- except it doesn't kiss you back. The sleepless nights spent thinking about it. The butterflies in your stomach on the first shoot day. That special feeling you get once it's all put together, or the whistles and claps from your proud friends when you screen the final version for the first time.

It's kind of hard to imagine a love substitute, but the art project certainly is the next best thing. It will replace the emotional excitement we inevitably yearn in life, however it probably won't replace the fireworks type of magic we find when we fall in love.

Luke Snellin's short film Mixtape, encompasses that magic. Nominated for a BAFTA, Snellin embraces the wonderful innocence of young love which will inevitably warm your heart.

Lipstick Jungle

If taking photographs of beautiful models aren't in my stars, I would consider myself lucky to create fantasy-type images of shoes, lipstick and purses. Mat Maitland work is to be worshiped.

You Are Beautiful

In a time of gloom & doom, art installations such as the Chicago based artists behind You Are Beautiful really just make me want to jump out of my unemployed gloominess, hug my roommate and tell her that everything is going to be okay.

Totally Washed Out

TORO Y MOI, pop/experimental artist from South Carolina has this amazing futuristic sound with a splash of R&B. He's from the same scene as Washed Out- another awesome artist I hope to hear more about.

Over-exposed: Marcelo Gomes

Based in New York, Brazilian photographer Marcelo Gomes (big clients like Urban Outfitters and New York Mag) makes over-exposed photographs looks stylish and beautiful, while toying with voyeurism. I particularly enjoyed his website. There is something incredibly satisfying about being able to move his images with my mouse. Interacting with voyeurism perhaps? See for yourself. And for the record, I have that dress!

Underwired' Hottest Geeks of 2009

Hot geeks are cool. Wired.com's blog Underwire is hosting a vote for 2009's sexiest Geek. Other then the random porn stars with a Geek-like hobby (dildo, PS2 remote... patato, patah-to), some of my favorite candidates are Samantha Youssef, animator and director at Ubisof (and a fellow Montrealer) and Google's Vice president & on Fortune's top 50 most powerful women in the world, Marissa Mayer. Well done ladies!
